Making Of · No. 011

From the kitchen table
to the game

Every BeavKat character starts as a drawing by Luke or Leo. Here is the whole journey for the newest one, George — nothing skipped, including the version the kids turned down.

01

Drawn at the kitchen table

Leo drew George on a tablet: shaggy blond hair, an ochre tunic with an X stitched across the sash, a green sword slung on his back and a small yellow horn on his belt. Everything that followed had to keep those details.

02

Rebuilt as a collectible toy

The drawing became a 3D render in the same style as the rest of the roster. It took five passes. The kids rejected one for looking mean, asked for a closed-mouth smile instead of a grin, and sent it back again because a fifteen-year-old should not look like a small child.

03

Cut into game sprites

Eight poses — idle, attack, hurt and win facing the camera, then idle, walk, jump and attack in profile — each rendered against a flat screen and cut out to a transparent 256px frame the game can draw directly.

04

Given a moment of his own

Finally a reveal shot: the breeze picks up, he draws the sword off his back and plants it like an oath. Same character, five days after he was a drawing.

No. 012 is blank on the roster right now. It stays blank until somebody draws it — which is the only way a character has ever got in.
